Meet Phil Lombard, the Woodward Avenue Jazz Orchestra director…
The first record he ever purchased was Miles Davis’ “Four” and More Recorded Live in Concert. He is the author of Fingering Practice for Beginning Bands, a workbook designed for band directors and young musicians. He is a fan of live music, who haunts Detroit’s most illustrious jazz venues. He has conducted, arranged music, and performed with a variety of different ensembles. After graduating from Western Kentucky University with a B.A. in music and Kent State with a M.A. in music, he spent 25 years in the military, first with the U.S. Air Force and then with the Michigan Air National Guard. Now, as director of the Woodward Avenue Jazz Orchestra, Philip Lombard finally has the opportunity to devote himself entirely to his true passion: jazz.
