Il Re Pastore
W.A. Mozart
This lively overture was written by Mozart in 1775. It was one of his first operas dealing with serious subject matter. Most of his earlier works were in a comedic style. He was awarded the commission by the Archduke of Austria and six weeks later, delivered a complete two-hour work.
Silverado
Bruce Broughton
The music for this 1985 film was nominated for an Academy Award. It is an old-fashioned Western, starring Keven Kline and Kevin Costner. The movie pays homage to films like The Magnificent Seven and High Noon.
Country Gardens
Percy Grainger
In 1919 Percy Grainger published the sheet music to his solo piano version of Country Gardens. It became phenomenally popular and made Grainger a millionaire. He grew to resent it though, feeling it obscured the rest of his compositions. The band version, written in 1953, was his last work for winds.
